Consume, Engage and Share – Optimizing in-game advertisements

The dynamics of brand engagement have evolved with the growing presence of social networks and virtual worlds. Offers just on the offer-wall are no longer sufficient. Brands must find other ways to engage users at all levels of social networking and online gaming. Nielsen Online reports show that social networks and blogs are now the 4th most popular online activity ahead of personal email, member communities are visited by 67% of the global online population, time spent is growing at 3 times the overall internet rate, accounting for almost 10% of all internet. That is 110 billion minutes on social networks and blog sites. It has also been reported that Facebook Ads seem to have a better turnover rate than traditional online ads, as they are more targeted towards an audience. In their recent study: "Virtual worlds: 2010 and beyond", KZero's analysts predict 60% growth in virtual worlds revenue from 2009 to 2010, rising from $1.3 to 2.1 Billion in worldwide revenues. This predicted increase is directly related to a 100% increase in the number of virtual worlds and an increase in ARPPU (Average Revenue Per Paying User). Virtual worlds revenue is expected to hit $9 billion by 2013.

The largest revenue maker will be micro-transactions.

Strategy Analytics today released its forecast for worldwide social virtual worlds, noting a 23% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2009-2015.The report predicts that virtual worlds will continue to improve the user experience and will convert registrations to active users at a 38% CAGR through 2015.

Coinciding with the high growth of individual registrants and active user base is revenue generation that comes from three key sources:

  • Microtransactions
  • Subscriptions
  • Advertising/sponsorships.

Of these three sources, microtransactions are expected to grow from slightly over $1 billion in 2008 to $17.3 billion in 2015 accounting for approximately 86% of the revenue generated by virtual worlds.

A recent report shows that Facebook continues gaining users across Europe and reaching 92.2 million users during August. Given Europe’s well-developed economies, this user growth could result in more advertising and virtual goods revenue for Facebook and third parties.The report, issued by Inside Facebook, states that the site has reached some interesting milestones throughout Europe. The United Kingdom, already home to the single largest group of European Facebook users, added more than one million people over the course of last month. It rose from 19.2 million monthly active users to 20.3 million. Denmark, meanwhile, inched up from 1.95 million users over the course of last month to pass the two million mark, reaching 2.11 million by the beginning of this month. And Serbia hit the one million user mark, rising from 991,000 to 1.08 million.

The fact that August is a holiday month across Europe, only reaffirms this growth as a strong trend and only tells us that the 100M user mark is imminent.
